Fuglesteg – A Spectacular Mountain Farm

The historic mountain farm Fuglesteg is perched on a narrow ledge high above the village of Fortun, in a dramatically steep mountainside. Located about 45 minutes by car from Krossbu, Fuglesteg has become a popular hiking destination, rewarding visitors with breathtaking views of the fjord and the surrounding mountains.

A marked trail leads up to Fuglesteg from County Road 55, just above Fortun. The hike takes around two hours and follows steep but well-defined terrain. Fuglesteg can also be reached via a marked route from Tindevegen over Bredalsbandet.

The lodge is closed from 1 November to 1 May due to ice and avalanche risk. During summer weekends, simple refreshments are often available for visitors. A unique and memorable hike for those seeking dramatic landscapes and a true sense of mountain history.

Hike to Molden – Panoramic Views over the Lustrafjord

Molden is one of Western Norway’s most popular hikes, renowned for its spectacular panoramic views over the Lustrafjord and the surrounding mountains.

Getting to the Trailhead
The starting point is located between Marifjøra and Hafslo, about one hour by car from Krossbu. Turn off County Road 55 at the signposted junction for Molden / Mollandsmarki, then follow the gravel road all the way to the parking area at Krossen.

The trail follows easy and well-maintained terrain and is suitable for most hikers with basic mountain experience. At the summit, you are rewarded with what many consider the finest view in Luster—a breathtaking panorama of fjords and mountains in every direction. A perfect spot to enjoy a break and lunch in the sun.

Norwegian Mountain Centre (Norsk Fjellsenter), Lom

Norsk Fjellsenter is an exciting visitor centre and exhibition venue located in the heart of Lom, offering engaging experiences for both adults and children.
Here you can:

  • Explore Norway’s largest exhibition of archaeological finds from melting ice, including Viking-era artefacts, ancient tools, and even a 500-year-old dog.
  • Experience full-scale mammoths, a reconstructed Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) mountain cabin, and inspiring nature films on a large screen.
  • Discover Fjellviten, a mini science centre for children with hands-on activities, interactive experiments, and learning through play.
  • Take part in treasure hunts, Viking-themed activities, and a nature trail around the centre.
  • Get valuable insight into hiking routes, wildlife, and plant life in Jotunheimen, Reinheimen, and Breheimen National Parks. The centre is an authorised visitor centre for all three parks.

Climate Park 2469 and the Ice Tunnel at Juvasshytta

At Juvasshytta, high in the mountains, you’ll find Climate Park 2469 and the impressive ice tunnel inside the Juvfonne glacier – a truly unique high-alpine experience. Entry to the ice tunnel requires a ticket.

Join a guided tour through a hand-carved ice tunnel, filled with ice sculptures and fascinating archaeological finds. Along the way, you’ll learn about prehistoric hunting, climate change, thawing permafrost, melting snowfields, and the animals and plants that survive in these harsh mountain environments.
The guided tour lasts approximately 2 hours.

Walk across the permafrost

A nearly 1-kilometre-long wooden walkway stretches across Juvflye and the permafrost area, offering insight into climate, geology, biology, and mountain history. The walk is about 2 kilometres round trip and is suitable for most visitors.

The Ice Tunnel in Juvfonne

The highlight of the visit is the stunning ice tunnel, sculpted by ice artist Peder Istad and inspired by Norse mythology. Inside, you’ll encounter a giant diamond, a captivating globe, a climate archive, the Midgard Serpent, and even a small cinema.
The ice in the tunnel is 7,600 years old, making it the oldest recorded ice on mainland Norway.

Galdhøpiggen Climbing Park
