Dumdalsgrottene

– An Exciting Day Trip

Dumdalsgrottene are located in Dumdalen, right next to County Road 55 (Sognefjellsvegen), just below Krossbu near Bøvertun. Over thousands of years, the river Dumma has carved out a fascinating system of caves and tunnels in the area’s limestone bedrock. Here you’ll find everything from large, cathedral-like chambers to narrow passages where you may need to squeeze through—no two caves are alike.
The limestone-rich ground makes Dumdalen a lush and beautiful valley, home to a rich variety of flowers and plant life. Combined with the sound of the river, clear mountain waters and spectacular caves, this is a memorable experience for the whole family.

Getting There

From Krossbu, follow the marked trail over Krosshøe and down into Dumdalen. This scenic day hike takes you through varied mountain terrain and ends at FV55. From there, you can check bus schedules and return to Krossbu by bus, or walk back along the road (approx. 7 km).
For the best and safest experience, we recommend joining a guided tour of the caves. A guide will ensure safe exploration and help you get the most out of this unique natural attraction.
